The Laveen area was first settled in 1884 by farmers. Initially, the community was isolated from Phoenix by the Salt River, which carried water year round until the Roosevelt Dam was completed in 1911. Parts of Laveen Village are an unincorporated community in Maricopa County, while the rest of the town falls within the city limits of Phoenix. The endangered Maricopa Language is spoken by less than 100 members of the tribe, who live at the Maricopa Colony near Laveen. The urban village is entirely located within the Sonoran Desert. High temperatures in the summer season can average over 105 degrees.
