The Chevrolet Equinox is a mid-size crossover introduced in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The vehicle rides on GMs Theta platform which is a unibody foundation similar to that on the Saturn Vue and Suzuki XL7. A version , the Torrent, was released under the Pontiac nameplate. Front-wheel drive is standard and all-wheel-drive is optional. The Equinox is not really designed for serious off-roading like the Tahoe and TrailBlazer which are truck-based platforms. For the 2006 model year, GM updated the Equinox, as GM badges were added on the front doors.

Part of a growing segment of plus-sized small crossover SUVs, the Chevrolet Equinox splits the difference between compact and midsize utility vehicles and offers roomy accommodations in a five-passenger layout. The Equinox emphasizes style, amenities and practicality over more traditional SUV attributes. In short, the Chevy Equinox is a great choice for commuting to work or transporting the kids, but it's not really suited for serious towing however.

The Equinox and Torrent were produced at the CAMI Automotive GM/Suzuki joint venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. The 3.4 L LNJ V6 engine is made by Shanghai GM while the Aisin AF33 automatic transmission is made in Japan. Starting with the 2008 model year, the Equinox Sport and Pontiac GXP came with a 3.6 L V6 engine that was built in the United States.
