The ultimate niche vehicle, the Jeep Wrangler has held the crown of ultimate affordable off-roader ever since it was first offered. This SUV's lineage goes back to the original military "Jeep." Since then, the Wrangler's off-road prowess and rough-tough image have continued and few accuse it of being the most civilized vehicle on the planet.
Chrysler has attempted to make each new generation of the Jeep Wrangler more livable with things like more contemporary interiors, more powerful engines and added convenience features. But the Wrangler stays true to its original purpose of providing rugged off-road capability and distinctive style. The Wrangler just keeps on marching to its own beat.
Here's a few highlights over the last decade in Wrangler production:
The 2004 Wrangler featured a new aluminum design for the Sahara trim, and the introduction of the Columbia trim. The car also got a new six-speed manual transmission. In 2006, Jeep introduced the Golden Eagle trim, which featured two-tone seats, decals on the body and heavy-duty off-roading packages. In 2007, Jeep completely redesigned the Wrangler, offering a new four-door model and a new V6 engine as well as updating many of the safety features. The 2008 Wrangler only saw a few minor changes to the car overall, like a new Sunrider top offered for the Rubicon and Sahara trims and optional add-ons like remote start.
In 2009, a few minor upgrades were made, including things like the addition of start assist, sway control and storage area upgrades. The 2010 Wrangler offered an easy to remove soft top. The Wrangler's standard features were upgraded to include fog lights and heavy-duty towing hooks. In 2011, Jeep introduced a brand new interior for the Wrangler with larger windows, also included were powered mirrors, climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and a number of other features.
In 2012, Jeep made a V6 engine with 285 horsepower standard, as well as introducing a new five-speed automatic transmission. All Wranglers were now four-wheel-drive standard, too. The 2013 Wrangler offered a new tire pressure monitoring system,and made a few minor changes to the interior and exterior trims. A 10th-Anniversary Rubicon trim was also introduced for a limited time. The 2014Wrangler featured minor changes to the trim levels.
